Magnolia Zuniga – Certified
Dec 13th, 2017 – The recent #metoo movement has sparked a necessary and long overdue discussion about the abuse of power, sexual misconduct, and sexual abuse worldwide. The yoga community is no exception. The allegations against my teachers Pattabhi Jois and Swami Satyananda Saraswati and his disciples are incredibly difficult and painful to reconcile. Some students confronted Pattabhi Jois about inappropriate touching in adjustments (myself included), but others did not, and were deeply hurt and/or traumatized. I continue to practice and teach both Ashtanga and Yoga Nidra systems because the benefits are incalculable. At the end of the day, however, I have neither explanation nor excuse for their behavior. I wish for healing and peace for all women and men negatively affected by their actions. Sincerely, Magnolia Zuniga
I’m among seventeen women worldwide to be a certified Ashtanga teacher as a direct student of Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois of Mysore, India. I am currently learning 4th series with Sharath Jois. I have attended two teacher courses through KPJAYI. These courses are designed specifically for authorized/certified teachers to help them better understand the method of Ashtanga Yoga and how to teach appropriately.
I was introduced to Ashtanga Yoga in 1997-98 by teachers Noah Williams and Kimberly ‘Kiki’ Flynn in Los Angeles, CA. In 2007 I received Sri K Pattabhi Jois’s blessing to teach Ashtanga Yoga and went on to teach in Hong Kong, Japan, France and am currently based in San Francisco, CA.
I met the Jois family; Sri K Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009), Sharath Jois and Saraswati Rangaswamy in Mysore, India in 2004. Since then, I have lived in India 2 to 12 months at a time each year. I consider these times to be of deep study and immersion into yogic practices, systems, and methodologies. I’ve been lucky to study with extraordinary masters; both the Jois family and the Bihar School of Yoga lineage (details below).Ashtanga Institute in Mysore India Noah Williams Kimberly “Kiki” Flynn
Bihar School of Yoga
In 2001 I moved to San Francisco to study Ayurveda and classical yoga with a disciple of Swami Satyananda Saraswati from the Bihar School of Yoga (BSY). I began studying Tantra and aspects of Satyananda Yoga, however, In 2007 it was time to study with Swami Satyananda (1923-2009) and Swami Niranjanananda directly. I moved to the BSY in Bihar India and was a resident of the ashram for approximately one year. In 2007 I was initiated into the sannyasa order as Kriyashakti Saraswati. My emphasis in the Satyananda lineage is the practice of Yoga Nidra.
In 2001 I moved to San Francisco to study Ayurveda and the classical yoga teachings from BSY (Bihar School of Yoga, see above). I became interested in Ayurveda after years suffering from severe asthma, chronic sinusitis, and bronchitis. Ayurveda was my first glimpse into finding a way to manage symptoms and disease through diet and lifestyle.
In 2004 I met my current doctor and teacher of Ayurveda Dr. Anil Kumar of Dixit Health Clinic in Mysore, India. I continue my studies with him each year.image Melisa Hall
I do not support or facilitate any form of Ashtanga Teacher Trainings. It is Guruji and Sharath’s instruction that practitioners must study at K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore before teaching this practice. The KPJAYI shala is the only authority to authorize or certify individuals to teach the Ashtanga Yoga method. I honor Guruji and Sharath’s request.
