Seasonal Cleansing w/Ayurveda; Safe, Practical & Authentic

Ayurveda has a longstanding tradition of detoxification called Pancha Karma (PK) with dietary, herbal, bodywork & lifestyle prescriptions tailored to the uniqueness of each individual. This workshop will address Ayurveda’s viewpoint of cleansing, PK pros & cons and specific timing and phases of the process. Case studies, tools, resources, herbs and nutritional guidelines will be discussed based on Debra’s experience. Why cleanse? Pancha Karma tunes digestive function, strengthens the body/ojas, removes toxins from their trapped locations in channels, joints and organs and leads to a longer, balanced yogic life.

All About Ojas, Healthy Immunity, Deep Energy and Allergy Relief

Allergies, skin issues, energy fluctuations, stress reactivity and heightened sensitivities are all signs of reduced or compromised Ojas from an Ayurvedic perspective. Ojas is said to be our reservoir of deep energy, our immune intelligence and true vitality. When ojas is strong our skin glows, our eyes are bright our essence radiates. Topics of this class include Ojas, energy enhancers, allergies, healthy skin with practical recommendations & remedies. Debra’s own healing journey began years ago when she sought a natural method to relieve lifelong allergies and adult-onset asthma, she discovered Ayurveda and with application of Ayurvedic recommendation and tools she eliminated her dependency on anti-histamines, inhalers and asthma medications

History of Ashtanga Yoga

During this time we’ll discuss:
1) History as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois

2) History as told by modern yoga scholars (Mark Singleton, Norman Sjoman, etc).

3) Common misconceptions about the method in the media/community, where they came from & how they’ve developed over time.

During this past year a few colleagues and I began researching and investigating the history of Ashtanga Yoga from the perspective of modern yoga scholars. We began by examining their works and interviewing sources in India. Our findings will be part of this afternoon’s discussion as part of a larger project/further research that will continue in India 2015.

Mark Singleton’s work ‘The Yoga Body’ has heretofore been considered the gold standard of works describing Ashtanga’s History. We will examine some of the works underlying assumptions and put forward an alternative narrative about how this popular form of yoga began.
